Renewal

The scent of pine and oak fill the air in the nave of St. Mary Cathedral in downtown Austin.

I have very fond memories of singing in the choir at St. Mary's Cathedral in Austin. Most of the section leaders also sing with the Opera. It is a beautiful thing to sing great music with great singers. Bishop Aymond and Fr. Bud are quite the dynamic duo.

One of the tenors was a surgeon who put his heart into choir. He also made everyone feel cherished with the appreciation receptions he put on for everyone.

Friday nights found the Church resonating with the sounds of Taize amidst the glow of hundreds of candles.

I loved how irreverent some of the choir members were. He who shall go unnamed loved to utter a few words to loud before the service began to rattle the prayerful reverent.

That is simply beautiful, Nick. To me, it's one of your best posts ever, because it's about YOU, and your encounters with the Divine in daily life. It is something which says, "THIS...this is my song."

I identified with being surrounded by great singers. Several of my friends from Gospel Choir at LSTC also sing with the Chicago Chorale or the Lyric Opera, and several others were music ministers at large Missionary Baptist congregations on the South Side, so there were powerhouse vocals galore. It was always a cool thing to hear formally-trained voices singing a quite-different style.

From the sounds of it, that might be a Catholic church that could at least get me in the door...

And I sure miss Taize music...haven't done any of that in a long, long while. More than a year...anyway, thanks for a really great message.
